Free YouTube tools for thumbnails and embeds
Creators, editors, designers and researchers regularly need two things from YouTube: the artwork that already exists for a video, and a clean way to embed it. These tools handle both without an API key, a login or a third-party download site. Paste a video URL and the thumbnail tool shows every size YouTube publishes; the embed tool builds a responsive iframe you can drop into a page or CMS.
This is deliberately not a video downloader. Downloading video or audio from YouTube is restricted by YouTube's terms unless you have permission, so this category stays on the safe side of that line: public thumbnail images and embed codes, which are the parts creators usually need for their own thumbnails, documentation and link previews.

Thumbnails and embeds, not video downloads
YouTube already stores several public sizes of every video thumbnail. The downloader maps a video URL to those image files and lets you save the size you need for a presentation, a link preview or your own channel artwork — no API key, no account and no scraping of private data. The embed generator goes the other way: it builds the iframe markup YouTube itself expects, with options such as a start time, privacy-enhanced mode and responsive sizing.
What this category deliberately does not do is download video or audio. YouTube's terms restrict that unless you have explicit permission, and sites built on it tend to run into both legal and advertising problems. Thumbnails and embed codes cover most legitimate creator needs without that risk. Remember that a thumbnail belongs to the channel that uploaded the video: use it with permission, and never republish someone else's artwork as your own.
- A thumbnail for a presentation or review
- Paste the video URL and download the maxres or hq image; the tool tells you which sizes actually exist.
- Embedding a video on a site that blocks trackers
- Embed Generator can use youtube-nocookie.com and disable related videos, with a responsive wrapper that keeps 16:9 on mobile.
- Starting playback at a specific moment
- Set the start time in the embed options; the generated iframe URL carries the timestamp, so no editing of the viewer's player is needed.
