About YouTube Timestamp Generator

Chapters make a long video easier to navigate, but YouTube only turns a timestamp list into chapters when the format is right: one timestamp per line, a title after each time, no duplicates and no going backwards. Pasting timestamps from a script or a recording tool and fixing them by hand is tedious, and it is easy to get slightly wrong.

This formatter parses lines such as 0:00 Intro and 1:23:45 Setup, converts them to a consistent m:ss or h:mm:ss format, and checks the list for duplicates, out-of-order timestamps and missing titles. It also flags the common YouTube requirements, including at least three chapters, the first at 0:00 and roughly ten seconds between chapters, before you copy the block or download it as a text file.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use YouTube Timestamp Generator for real work.
  • Tolerant timestamp parsing

Accepts 0:00, 00:00, 1:23:45 and a title after the time with or without a dash.

  • Ordering validation

Timestamps must increase; duplicates and lines that go backwards are reported with the line number and the original text.

  • Normalized output

Every line is rewritten as m:ss or h:mm:ss, so the block pastes cleanly into a video description.

  • Chapter rule warnings

Flags a first chapter that is not 0:00, fewer than three chapters, and sections shorter than ten seconds.

  • Copy or download

Copy the chapter block to the clipboard or save it as a .txt file for a description draft.

  • Live line-by-line errors

Problems appear as you type and quote the offending line, making the fix obvious in a long list.

How to use YouTube Timestamp Generator

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Paste the timestamp list

Use one chapter per line, starting each line with a time such as 0:00 or 1:02:03, followed by the chapter title.

  2. 02

    Fix the reported lines

If a line is malformed, duplicated or earlier than the previous chapter, the error names the line number and shows the text to correct.

  3. 03

    Review the warnings

Warnings cover YouTube's display rules, such as starting at 0:00 and having at least three chapters of ten seconds or more.

  4. 04

    Check the normalized block

The output rewrites every timestamp consistently so the block is ready to paste into a description.

  5. 05

    Copy or download

Press Copy chapters for the clipboard, or Download .txt to save the formatted block as a text file.

Limitations worth knowing

  • The tool formats and checks timestamps; it cannot upload them or verify a video's actual chapter boundaries.
  • The 0:00, three-chapter and ten-second YouTube rules are reported as warnings rather than enforced by blocking the output.
  • Offsets such as 1:90 are rejected rather than silently converted; write 2:30 instead.

Privacy and file handling

Timestamp lists are parsed and validated in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you paste is uploaded, stored or logged, and no request is made to a server while you format chapters.

YouTube Timestamp Generator FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Which timestamp format does YouTube accept?
YouTube accepts m:ss for videos under an hour and h:mm:ss for longer ones, with a space and a title after each timestamp. The first chapter must be 0:00, and a video needs at least three timestamps before chapters appear.
Why are my chapters not showing on YouTube?
The usual causes are a missing 0:00 first chapter, fewer than three timestamps, a chapter shorter than ten seconds, or a line that does not parse. This tool checks those conditions and reports the ones it can detect.
What counts as a duplicate timestamp?
Any two chapters with the same number of seconds. 1:05 and 01:05 are duplicates because both normalize to 1:05, and the later line is reported with the earlier line as a reference point.
Can I use hours in my timestamps?
Yes. Lines with three parts such as 1:23:45 are read as hours, minutes and seconds and normalized to the same h:mm:ss form. Two-part timestamps are read as minutes and seconds.
Why does the first chapter have to start at 0:00?
YouTube uses the first timestamp as the start of the chapter list, so a list beginning at 0:30 leaves the opening half minute outside every chapter. The formatter warns when the first timestamp is not 0:00.
Does the timestamp generator change my chapter titles?
Only whitespace and a leading dash or colon are trimmed from the title; the words themselves are kept exactly as typed. The timestamp is normalized, but the title text is never rewritten.
How many chapters can I add to a video?
YouTube's description length is the practical limit rather than a fixed chapter count. The tool accepts any number of lines, and the output stays readable as long as it fits within YouTube's description limit.
Are my timestamps uploaded when I format them?
No. Parsing and validation run in your browser and the text never leaves your device. Nothing is stored, and closing the page clears both the input and the generated chapter block.
