About YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images that the platform serves publicly, and creators, editors and designers often need the full-size version for a thumbnail refresh, a press kit or a link preview. The images live at predictable addresses built from the 11-character video ID, which is what this tool extracts from whatever link you paste.
No YouTube API key, no sign-in and no video download: paste a watch, share or Shorts link and the tool lists every size that exists for that video, previews it at the real pixel dimensions and lets you save the JPG you need. If a video has no maximum-resolution thumbnail, that row is marked as unavailable instead of failing the whole page.
What this tool does
Every published size in one view
Maximum (1280 × 720), standard (640 × 480), high (480 × 360), medium (320 × 180) and default (120 × 90), each previewed and downloadable.
Any YouTube link shape
Watch links, youtu.be share links, Shorts, live and embed URLs are all accepted, along with a bare 11-character video ID.
Missing maxres handled gracefully
Videos without a maximum-resolution image show a clearly labelled unavailable row and a short explanation instead of a broken image or a page-level error.
Downloads through a same-origin proxy
Each JPG is fetched through a small FormatFlow route, so downloads keep a sensible filename even where direct YouTube image access is blocked.
No API key or account
The public image address is derived from the video ID, so there is nothing to sign in to, no API quota and no key to configure.
Real dimensions shown
Every preview reports the actual pixel width and height of the loaded image rather than only quoting the standard label.
How to use YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
- 01
Copy the video link
Copy the watch URL from the address bar, use Share to copy a youtu.be link, or copy a Shorts link from the Shorts feed.
- 02
Paste it into the tool
Paste the link into the input. A bare 11-character video ID works too if you already have one.
- 03
Get the thumbnail sizes
Press Get thumbnails. The tool extracts the video ID and checks which sizes YouTube publishes for that video.
- 04
Preview and choose
Each published size shows a preview and its real pixel dimensions; sizes that are not available are labelled clearly.
- 05
Download the JPG
Press Download JPG on the size you need. The file is named with the video ID and size so multiple downloads stay organised.
How this tool works
- Works with
- Thumbnails
- Processing
- Client-side, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
- Maximum size
- Thumbnails up to 1280 × 720 px
- Requirements
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari · An internet connection to reach YouTube's image servers
Limitations worth knowing
- Only the five thumbnail sizes YouTube publishes are available; there is no custom crop and no version larger than maxresdefault.
- A private, deleted or region-blocked video may have no accessible thumbnails, in which case the tool reports that nothing could be loaded.
- Thumbnail ownership stays with the uploading channel; downloading an image does not grant rights to reuse it.
Privacy and file handling
The video ID is extracted in your browser. Each preview and download is requested through a small same-origin proxy at /api/youtube-thumbnail, which fetches the public image from YouTube and passes it back without storing it. FormatFlow does not save a copy of the thumbnail or the link, and no account, API key or personal data is involved.
