Free biology tools for genetics and sequences

Biology teaching tools work best when they make an assumption visible. A Punnett square is only meaningful for the inheritance model you choose, GC content depends on how ambiguous bases are treated, and magnification depends on which lenses are in the light path. These tools show the result and the assumption beside it.

The Punnett square calculator renders a single-gene cross and reports genotype and phenotype ratios; the GC content tool cleans common sequence formatting and reports base counts; the microscope calculator multiplies objective and eyepiece magnification and converts field-of-view sizes. They are educational calculators, not diagnostic or clinical tools, and not a substitute for a wet-lab protocol.

Educational genetics and sequence arithmetic

Biology teaching tools are models. A Punnett square shows the expected outcomes of a defined cross — usually one gene, two alleles and complete dominance — and the ratio is a probability statement, not a guarantee for any family. The GC content calculator reports what it does with ambiguous bases so the denominator is never hidden, and the microscope calculator states which lenses it assumes.

Sequence and genetics tools in this category are for learning, coursework and quick data checks. They do not validate FASTA files for publication, call variants, assess pathogenicity or replace a laboratory protocol. If a result will be used in a report, keep the input and the assumptions alongside it so a reader can reproduce the number.

Explaining a 3:1 ratio in class
Run Aa × Aa and show both the genotype and phenotype tables so students see where the ratio comes from.
Checking a sequence's GC content
Paste the sequence or a FASTA record; the tool strips headers and reports base counts before the percentage.
Calculating total magnification
Multiply objective and eyepiece power, then convert the field-of-view diameter for the next objective.

Biology Tools questions

Are the biology tools free and private?
Yes. Every tool runs in your browser, is free to use without an account and never uploads the genotypes or sequences you type. Nothing is stored after you close the page.
Are Punnett square results real family predictions?
No. A Punnett square gives theoretical probabilities for a specified inheritance model, such as a single gene with complete dominance. Real inheritance can involve multiple genes, incomplete dominance, linked genes and chance, so a 3:1 ratio does not describe any particular family.
How are ambiguous DNA bases handled in GC content?
The calculator can report ambiguous letters such as N or R separately and exclude them from the GC percentage, so the denominator is the number of unambiguous bases. The page states which treatment was used for your sequence.
What does microscope magnification include?
Total magnification is the objective magnification multiplied by the eyepiece magnification. The calculator also converts field-of-view diameter between objectives, assuming the same eyepiece and a standard microscope without extra intermediate lenses.
Can these tools be used for clinical or diagnostic work?
No. They are educational and arithmetic only. Genetic risk, pathogen testing and clinical measurements require validated laboratory methods, controls and qualified interpretation.
