About JPG to PNG

JPG and PNG solve different problems. JPG is a compressed photo format that throws away detail to save space; PNG stores every pixel exactly, which makes it the right container for screenshots, logos, line art and any file that will be edited or printed. Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail the JPG already lost, but it does stop further damage: every edit and re-save of a PNG is lossless.

This converter decodes each JPEG in the browser canvas, draws it at its original width and height, and encodes the result as PNG. It accepts several files at once, keeps the original dimensions and names the downloads after your source files. Because the work happens on your device, nothing is uploaded and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use JPG to PNG for real work.
  • Lossless PNG output

Every pixel is stored exactly as decoded, so re-editing and re-saving the PNG never adds another round of JPEG artefacts.

  • Original resolution kept

The PNG matches the JPG width and height in pixels; nothing is resized, re-sampled or sharpened on the way out.

  • Batch conversion

Drop up to 20 JPG files and convert them in one pass; every result keeps its own filename and download button.

  • Private by design

Decoding and encoding run in your browser tab, so photos never travel to a server and no copy is stored anywhere.

  • No watermark or account

The downloaded PNG is a clean full-quality file with nothing added, and you can convert as many batches as you like.

How to use JPG to PNG

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Add your JPG files

Drop them onto the picker or click Choose files. Up to 20 images can be queued at once.

  2. 02

    Review the batch

Each row shows the file name and size. Remove anything you picked by mistake before converting.

  3. 03

    Click Convert to PNG

The browser decodes each JPG and writes a PNG at the same pixel dimensions, with progress shown per file.

  4. 04

    Download the results

Use the Download button on any row, then start over with a new batch whenever you need to.

Limitations worth knowing

  • PNG files are much larger than the JPGs they came from because no pixels are discarded.
  • JPEG compression artefacts stay in the image; conversion cannot restore lost detail or sharpness.
  • JPEG files cannot carry transparency, so the PNG output always has an opaque background.
  • Very large images can exceed the memory a browser tab is allowed to use and fail to convert.

Privacy and file handling

Your JPG files are decoded and re-encoded inside your browser tab using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded, no server is involved, and no copy of your photos is stored by FormatFlow. Closing the tab clears the batch from memory.

JPG to PNG FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. The JPEG compression artefacts are already baked into the file. PNG stops the image losing more quality each time you edit and save it, but it cannot invent detail that was discarded when the photo was saved.
Why is the PNG file so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel instead of approximating groups of them. A 2 MB photo commonly becomes 10 MB or more as PNG; that is expected behaviour, not a bug in the conversion.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPEG has no transparency channel, so there is nothing to carry over. If you need a cut-out image, start from a transparent PNG or WebP and keep its alpha channel with the PNG to WebP tool instead.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab and the files never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and convert a batch offline.
Can I convert several JPGs at once?
Yes, up to 20 files per batch. They are processed one after another with a progress readout, and each converted PNG gets its own download button in the result list.
Does the converter keep camera data and location tags?
No. Re-encoding through the canvas writes fresh PNG pixel data, so EXIF fields such as camera model, date taken and GPS coordinates are dropped. The image orientation is applied first, so rotated photos still look right.
What happens to really large photos?
The per-file limit is 50 MB, but very large images (above roughly 50 megapixels) can exhaust the memory available to a browser tab. If a file fails, reduce it with the image resizer first or use a desktop editor.
Can I convert JPG files on a phone?
Yes. The picker opens your photo library on iOS and Android and uses the same canvas path. Large batches are slower on phones, so convert a few images at a time there.
