About JPG to WebP

WebP is the image format modern websites expect. It supports lossy and lossless compression, keeps transparency, and usually produces a smaller file than JPG at the same visual quality. If you run a site or hand images to a developer, WebP is often the difference between a page that loads quickly and one that does not.

The conversion runs through the canvas encoder built into your browser. You set the WebP quality, choose one or more JPGs, and the tool writes a WebP at the same pixel dimensions. If the browser cannot encode WebP at all, the tool says so instead of quietly producing a PNG with the wrong extension.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use JPG to WebP for real work.
  • Quality control

Set WebP quality from 5 to 100 and see the resulting file size for every image in the batch.

  • Batch conversion

Convert up to 20 JPGs in one run, each with its own download button and filename.

  • Same pixels, smaller file

Width and height in pixels stay identical; only the compression and container change.

  • Encoder check

The tool verifies that the browser really produced WebP and reports an error instead of mislabelling a fallback file.

  • Local processing

Photos stay on your device; conversion works offline once the page has loaded.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Old software and some messaging apps still cannot open WebP files.
  • WebP at the quality settings shown is lossy; keep the original JPGs as your master copies.
  • Animated WebP cannot be produced; only still images are written.

Privacy and file handling

Conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your JPG files are decoded and re-encoded on your own device, never uploaded to FormatFlow, and no copy is kept after you close the page.

JPG to WebP FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
It depends on the image. At comparable visual quality, WebP usually produces files 20-50% smaller than JPG for photographs and much smaller for flat graphics with few colours. The result list shows the exact original and output sizes for your files.
Which browsers can open WebP files?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14 and later, and all current mobile browsers support WebP. Very old software and some desktop apps still cannot open it, so keep the JPGs if you need to share with unknown tools.
Does the converter keep the image dimensions?
Yes. The WebP has the same width and height in pixels as the JPG. If you also need different dimensions, resize the image first with the image resizer.
Why does the tool say my browser cannot encode WebP?
WebP encoding in the canvas is available in all current browsers but missing from some older ones. When it is unavailable, the tool stops with a clear message rather than saving a file with the wrong format.
Can I convert transparent images to WebP?
Yes, WebP supports an alpha channel, but this particular tool takes JPG input only. Use the PNG to WebP tool for images with transparency.
Is there a limit on how many files I can convert?
Up to 20 files per batch and 50 MB per file. Browser memory is the real limit; a folder of 20 large photos may take a while on a phone.
Are my JPGs uploaded for conversion?
No. The encoding happens in your browser tab and the files are never sent anywhere. The site has no server-side endpoint that accepts image data.
What happens to EXIF data and rotation?
Rotation stored in EXIF is applied so the photo is not sideways, but other EXIF fields such as camera details, capture date and GPS are dropped in the re-encode.
