About PNG to WebP

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but it is rarely the smallest option. WebP can keep the same alpha channel while compressing the pixels far more aggressively, which is why most modern sites serve WebP versions of their logos, illustrations and screenshots. Converting a folder of PNGs to WebP is one of the simplest ways to speed up a page.

This converter draws each PNG onto a canvas and encodes it as WebP at the quality you choose, preserving transparent areas. Transparent logos stay transparent and pixel dimensions do not change. The tool checks that the browser really supports WebP encoding and reports a clear error if it does not.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use PNG to WebP for real work.
  • Transparency preserved

Unlike JPG, WebP keeps the alpha channel, so logos and interface assets stay cut out against any background.

  • Quality control

Choose a WebP quality level; flat graphics often look perfect well below the default.

  • Batch conversion

Convert up to 20 PNG files in a single pass with a result row for each file.

  • Size comparison

Each result shows the original and WebP size so you can see how much the image shrank.

  • Local and private

Images are processed in the browser tab and never uploaded; the tool works offline.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on desktop or mobile

Limitations worth knowing

  • WebP output is lossy; keep the PNG originals if you need exact pixels.
  • Some older software, email clients and content management systems do not accept WebP.
  • Photos stored as PNG are usually larger than the same photo saved as JPG, even after conversion.

Privacy and file handling

The conversion runs inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your PNG files are never uploaded, never leave your device and are not stored anywhere. Refreshing the page clears the current batch.

PNG to WebP FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Does PNG to WebP keep the transparent background?
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel and this tool keeps it, so logos with transparent backgrounds stay transparent after conversion.
Is the WebP output lossless?
No. The output is lossy WebP at the quality you pick, because that is what produces the large savings. A quality setting of 100 keeps artefacts very low, but the result is still not mathematically identical to the PNG.
How much space will I save?
Flat graphics usually compress a lot; photographic PNGs compress less because they are already pixel-heavy. The result list reports the exact sizes, so you can compare before downloading.
Can browsers open WebP files?
All current browsers can: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14+ and current mobile browsers. Older software may still need PNG or JPG versions.
Will the image dimensions change?
No. Width and height in pixels are the same as the source PNG; only the encoding and file size change.
Why does the tool refuse to encode WebP in my browser?
A few older browsers expose a WebP decoder but not an encoder. The tool detects that and shows a message rather than saving a mislabelled PNG file.
How many files can I convert at once?
Up to 20 files per batch and 50 MB per file. If processing is slow on a phone, split the batch into smaller groups.
Do I keep the alpha channel if I convert WebP back to PNG later?
Yes. Round-tripping through WebP preserves transparency, although the lossy encode means the pixels are not identical to the original PNG.
