About Video Resizer

Resolution is the biggest lever on how a video looks and how large it is. A 4K phone recording is wonderful on the phone that shot it and painful to send, upload or store, while a 480p copy is small enough for chat and usually indistinguishable on a screen that small. Resizing is the difference between a clip that gets shared and one that bounces from an attachment limit.

This tool gives you a target height, a maximum width, or both, and lets FFmpeg on the server re-encode the clip to fit. The aspect ratio is always kept and the frame is never enlarged: if you ask for 1080p from a 360p source, the original size is used rather than a blurry upscale. The result is a standard MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Video Resizer for real work.
  • Height presets that matter

Choose 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p and the width follows automatically, which covers most sharing and embedding situations.

  • A maximum width option

Portrait video, social crops and layout constraints are easier to hit with a pixel width; combine it with a height to fit inside a box.

  • No silent upscaling

A target larger than the source leaves the original resolution untouched. The tool only ever removes pixels, never invents them.

  • Aspect ratio preserved

No stretching or squashing: the frame is scaled proportionally, and the final dimensions are rounded to even numbers for H.264.

  • Source size shown first

When your browser can read the file, the workspace shows the original frame size so you know whether a target is a downscale before you start.

  • Automatic cleanup

The uploaded video and the resized copy are written to a temporary folder only and deleted automatically after the download.

How to use Video Resizer

No account, no installation — one upload, one conversion, and the temporary copy is deleted.
  1. 01

    Upload the video

Drop an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or another supported file into the workspace. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.

  2. 02

    Choose a target height

Pick 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p, or leave it on the original if you only want to limit the width.

  3. 03

    Optionally cap the width

Add a maximum width when the video is portrait or needs to fit a specific layout. The aspect ratio stays intact.

  4. 04

    Resize and download

Click Resize video, wait for the server re-encode, preview the result and download the MP4.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Resizing re-encodes the video, so it is lossy and cannot add detail the source did not have.
  • No cropping, padding or aspect-ratio changes: the whole frame is kept and scaled proportionally.
  • HDR and Dolby Vision sources are converted to standard SDR color.
  • Uploads are capped at 100 MB, one file per job, with a three-minute processing limit.

Privacy and file handling

The uploaded video is written to a temporary working directory on our server, resized with FFmpeg, and streamed back to your browser. Both the upload and the resized copy are deleted automatically when the download completes; nothing is stored long term or shared.

Video Resizer FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Will resizing stretch or squash the picture?
No. The width and height are scaled together to keep the original aspect ratio; one dimension follows from the other unless you constrain both, in which case the video fits inside that box.
Will the tool upscale a low-resolution video?
No. If the target height or width is larger than the source, the original dimensions are kept. Upscaling would only enlarge a blurry picture, so the tool deliberately avoids it.
Why is my video not exactly 720p after resizing?
Only one dimension is fixed at a time. The other follows the source aspect ratio, so a 16:9 video set to 720p becomes 1280 × 720, and unusual aspect ratios can produce slightly different numbers rounded to even values.
Can I resize a portrait video from a phone?
Yes. Choose a target height or set a maximum width; the tool keeps the portrait orientation and scales proportionally rather than forcing a landscape frame.
Does resizing lower the video quality?
Yes. The clip is re-encoded and smaller frames carry less detail. For sharing and embedded playback the difference is usually invisible one screen; keep the original if you might edit the clip later.
Can I crop and resize in the same step?
No. This tool only changes resolution and keeps the whole frame. Cropping needs an editor or a dedicated crop tool, after which you can resize the cropped result here.
What are the limits of video resizing?
Uploads are limited to 100 MB, one video per job, and processing stops after three minutes. Very long 4K clips may not finish within that window.
Is the resized video stored anywhere?
No. The upload and the resized file are deleted automatically after your download. They exist only in a temporary server directory for the duration of the job.
