About Slug Generator

A slug is the readable part of a URL after the domain: the words that tell a person and a search engine what a page is about. WordPress, Shopify, Ghost and most content systems generate one from the title, but the result often keeps punctuation, drops accented letters or turns a short title into a long, unreadable run of words.

This generator builds the slug in your browser as you type. It folds accented Latin letters to plain ones, replaces punctuation with the separator you choose, optionally removes common function words so the important terms survive, and cuts the result at a word boundary when it passes your length limit. The live character count shows exactly what will be pasted.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Slug Generator for real work.
  • Accent folding

Unicode NFKD decomposition strips diacritics so Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee, and letters such as ß, æ, œ, ø, đ, ł, ð and þ are mapped by hand.

  • Hyphen or underscore separator

Switch between the hyphen that search engines expect and the underscore that some naming conventions use; repeated separators collapse automatically.

  • Optional stop-word removal

Drop English function words such as the, and and to when a shorter slug reads better, with a count of exactly how many were removed.

  • Length limit that respects words

Set a maximum from 1 to 200 characters or turn the limit off; whole words are kept and the last word is only cut when it alone is too long.

  • Live preview and character count

The slug and its character total update as you type, so you can see when a title is too long before pasting it into a CMS.

  • One-click copy

Copy the slug to the clipboard with a confirmation, or clear the input and start on the next title.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Letters from scripts without a Latin form are kept as Unicode rather than romanized, so a non-Latin slug appears percent-encoded in the address bar.
  • The length limit can cut the final word of a title; raise the limit or edit the slug by hand when the ending matters.
  • The generator does not check whether a slug is already used on your site or whether changing it needs a redirect.

Privacy and file handling

The text you paste and the slug it produces stay in this browser tab. Everything runs with JavaScript on your device, so no title, sentence or output is uploaded, saved or logged, and closing the page clears it.

Slug Generator FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
What is a URL slug?
A URL slug is the part of an address that identifies a page in readable words, such as url-slug-generator in /tools/url-slug-generator. Search engines and readers use it to judge what the page covers, so a short, descriptive slug is worth the extra minute.
How are accented letters and special characters handled?
The text is decomposed with Unicode NFKD and the combining diacritic marks are removed, so café becomes cafe and naïve becomes naive. Letters that do not decompose, such as ß, æ, œ, ø, đ, ł, ð and þ, are replaced with their closest Latin spelling.
Which characters end up in the slug?
Only letters, numbers and the separator you choose. Spaces, punctuation, quotes and symbols become a single separator, repeated separators are collapsed, and a slug never starts or ends with one.
What happens to Chinese, Japanese, Arabic or Cyrillic text?
Letters from scripts without a Latin form are kept as Unicode characters rather than romanized, so the slug still carries meaning and the browser percent-encodes them in the address bar. If you need an ASCII-only URL, romanize the title before pasting it here.
Why remove stop words from a slug?
Words such as the, and, of and to appear in almost every title and add little to an address. Removing them keeps slugs short and puts the distinctive nouns first, though a phrase that needs them to read naturally is better kept intact.
How does the maximum length work?
The generator adds whole words while they fit and stops before the limit is crossed. A single word longer than the limit is cut at exactly that many characters, and a message above the output tells you when the slug was shortened.
Does the generator check whether a slug is already in use?
No. It only builds the text; it does not look up your site or the internet, so you still need to confirm that the URL is unique and add a redirect when you change the slug of an existing page.
Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?
No. Slug generation is plain JavaScript running in this browser tab, so the text is never uploaded, stored or logged. Closing the page discards the input and the slug.
