About Word Counter

A word counter is usually used against a limit: an essay cap, a meta description field, a cover letter box, or a script that has to fit a segment. This one updates every number while you type or paste, so the distance to the limit is visible without pressing a button. Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs are reported at the same time.

Beyond the basics it estimates reading time at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130 words per minute, which is the difference between a five minute read and a five minute talk. It also lists the ten most repeated words after common function words are removed, so a phrase you have leaned on too hard becomes obvious.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Word Counter for real work.
  • Counts update as you type

Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs refresh after a short pause on every edit; there is no Calculate button to hunt for.

  • Characters with and without spaces

Both totals sit next to each other, which matters for form fields that count spaces and social posts that count characters strictly.

  • Reading and speaking time

Estimates how long your text takes to read silently at 200 words per minute or to deliver aloud at 130 words per minute.

  • Top 10 keyword density

A table ranks the ten most frequent words with their count and percentage share of the text, with common words filtered out.

  • Paste and clear in one click

Paste inserts clipboard text at the cursor, and Clear empties the box and resets every counter without reloading the page.

  • Built for long drafts

Counting waits for a short pause between keystrokes, so a long article or interview transcript does not make the textarea feel sluggish.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Sentence counting relies on punctuation, so abbreviations such as e.g. and i.e. can slightly change the sentence total.
  • Different editors define words and characters differently; the same text can produce a slightly different count in Word or Google Docs.
  • Very large pastes (several megabytes) depend on the memory of your device and may be slower in older mobile browsers.

Privacy and file handling

Your text never leaves this browser tab. Counting, reading time and keyword density are computed with JavaScript on your device, so nothing is uploaded, stored or analyzed on a server. Closing the page discards the text.

Word Counter FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
How does the word counter count words?
It counts runs of letters and numbers separated by whitespace, including internal apostrophes such as in don't. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are counted one per character so that a whole paragraph does not register as a single word.
Are characters counted with or without spaces?
Both totals are shown. Characters without spaces removes every whitespace character, while characters with spaces keeps them, including line breaks and indentation from pasted text.
How are reading time and speaking time calculated?
Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute, a common pace for web copy and long-form reading. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both round to the nearest second.
What count as sentences and paragraphs here?
Sentences are split at sentence-ending punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by one or more line breaks, so each line of a pasted list counts as a paragraph.
Why are common words removed from keyword density?
Words such as the, and and of appear in almost every sentence, so they would top the list in any length of text. Filtering them leaves the nouns, verbs and repeated phrases that tell you what the text is actually about.
Does the word counter send my text to a server?
No. Counting runs entirely in this browser tab with JavaScript, so the text is never uploaded, saved or logged. That makes it safe for unpublished drafts, client copy and scripts that have not been approved yet.
Why is the count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Different tools treat hyphens, numbers, symbols and inline punctuation differently. This tool counts letter and number runs separated by whitespace, so a small difference on the same text is normal rather than a bug in your draft.
Is there a maximum amount of text?
There is no fixed character cap; the practical limit is the memory of your device and browser. Drafts of several hundred thousand characters count comfortably, while pasting a multi-megabyte transcript may feel slower on older phones.
