About MP4 to MP3

A video file is usually two streams stacked together: pictures and sound. If you only want the sound, the video track is dead weight, and that is the case for lectures, interviews, concert recordings and any clip you want to listen to on a phone with the screen off. This tool pulls out the first audio track and turns it into a plain MP3 file.

The conversion happens on our server with FFmpeg. The MP4 is decoded, the audio is encoded with the LAME MP3 encoder at the bitrate you choose, and the video is discarded. The result keeps the length of the original soundtrack, gets a filename based on your video, and arrives as a normal download that any music player or podcast host accepts.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use MP4 to MP3 for real work.
  • Bitrate choice that means something

128 kbps suits speech, 192 kbps is the default for general listening and 320 kbps keeps the most detail for music that will be edited or re-encoded later.

  • Accepts MP4 and M4V

Both the standard MP4 video container and the M4V variant used by Apple devices are supported, as long as the file contains an audio track.

  • Video track discarded

Only the audio stream is written to the output; no video data is kept in the MP3, so the file is a fraction of the original size.

  • Same length as the source

The MP3 matches the duration of the original soundtrack, with no trimming or gaps introduced by the conversion.

  • No account required

Open the page, upload, download. There is no registration wall, no watermark on the audio and no daily quota to work around.

  • Automatic deletion

The uploaded MP4 and the extracted MP3 live in a temporary folder on the server and are deleted automatically after your download.

  2. 02

    Pick an MP3 bitrate

Use 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for music and general use, or 320 kbps when you want the highest quality MP3 this tool can produce.

  3. 03

    Extract the audio

Click Convert to MP3. The upload progress is shown, then the server extracts and encodes the soundtrack.

  4. 04

Limitations worth knowing

  • Accepts .mp4 and .m4v only, up to 100 MB, one file per job.
  • The output is a lossy MP3; it is not a lossless copy of the original AAC audio.
  • Only the first audio track is extracted; extra language or commentary tracks are ignored.
  • Jobs stop after three minutes, so very long videos may not finish.

Privacy and file handling

Your MP4 is uploaded to a temporary working directory on our server, the audio is extracted with FFmpeg, and the MP3 is streamed back to your browser. Both files are deleted automatically when the download completes; nothing is stored permanently, analysed or shared, and no account is needed.

MP4 to MP3 FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Which MP4 files can this tool extract audio from?
It accepts .mp4 and .m4v files that contain at least one audio track. Videos recorded without sound, or files whose audio track is broken, cannot be converted and return a clear error instead.
Which bitrate should I choose for speech?
128 kbps is plenty for speech, lectures and podcasts. Choose 192 kbps for music and mixed content, and 320 kbps only when the MP3 will be edited or converted again later.
Does extracting MP4 audio to MP3 reduce quality?
Yes. The original soundtrack is already compressed, usually with AAC, and encoding it to MP3 is a second lossy step. At 192 kbps or higher the difference is subtle, but it is not a lossless copy of the original audio.
Can I extract audio from a MOV or MKV file here?
Not directly: this tool accepts .mp4 and .m4v only. Convert the MOV or MKV to MP4 with the video converters first, then extract the MP3 from the result.
What happens if the video has no audio track?
The job stops with a message explaining that the file has no audio track, and the uploaded file is deleted. Nothing is downloaded, and you can try a different video without reloading the page.
Will the MP3 be the same length as the video?
Yes, it covers the full audio track. Encoders can add or remove a few milliseconds of padding at the start and end, which is normal for MP3 and inaudible in practice.
How large can the MP4 file be?
Uploads are limited to 100 MB and one file per job, and a conversion is stopped after three minutes. That covers typical phone clips, screen recordings and short interviews.
Is the video or the MP3 stored after conversion?
No. Both files exist only in a temporary directory during the job and are deleted automatically when the download finishes. There is no permanent storage and no account linking.
