About MOV to MP4

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. iPhones, iPads and Macs record into it, and video editors export into it, which is why a MOV often arrives on a Windows machine that will not play it. Converting to MP4 fixes the compatibility problem without touching the picture you already recorded.

This tool takes a .mov file and writes a fresh MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio. It works with regular H.264 recordings as well as HEVC clips from newer iPhones, because the server decodes the source and re-encodes it into the widely supported standard rather than copying streams that other devices cannot read.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use MOV to MP4 for real work.
  • Built for QuickTime files

The picker accepts .mov only, so the tool stays focused on the one conversion it promises instead of guessing what an ambiguous file should become.

  • HEVC inside MOV is supported

Newer iPhones record HEVC in a MOV wrapper. The converter decodes that stream and produces H.264 MP4, which plays on far more devices.

  • Quality you control

High, balanced and small presets map to different encoder quality levels, so you can decide whether the priority is picture detail or a smaller download.

  • Audio converted to AAC

The first audio track becomes 128 kbps AAC audio inside the MP4, which is stereo-compatible with phones, browsers and TVs.

  • Plays while it downloads

The MP4 is written with faststart metadata, so web players and messaging apps can start playback before the file has fully loaded.

  • No account, no watermark

The converted file is a clean MP4 with nothing added. The upload is deleted from the server automatically after your download.

How to use MOV to MP4

No account, no installation — one upload, one conversion, and the temporary copy is deleted.
  1. 01

    Add the MOV file

Drop the .mov file into the workspace or click Choose file. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.

  2. 02

    Pick the output quality

Balanced is a good default. Choose high for clips with fast motion or fine texture, or small when you need a lighter file.

  3. 03

    Convert to MP4

Click Convert to MP4 and wait for the upload bar to finish, then for the server-side re-encode to complete.

  4. 04

    Preview and download

Check the result in the built-in player, then download the MP4 with a filename based on the original clip.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Accepts .mov files only, up to 100 MB, one file per job.
  • HDR and Dolby Vision MOV clips are converted to standard SDR color, so the look can change.
  • Only the first audio track is kept; extra audio and subtitle tracks are dropped.
  • Jobs stop after three minutes, so long 4K MOV recordings may not complete.

Privacy and file handling

The MOV file is uploaded to a temporary folder on our server, converted to MP4 with FFmpeg, and sent back as a download. The upload and the result are deleted automatically once the download finishes, and nothing is copied to permanent storage or shared with anyone.

MOV to MP4 FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Why convert a MOV file to MP4?
MOV plays natively on Apple devices but is awkward on Windows, Android and many TVs. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is accepted by nearly every player, browser and social platform.
Can I convert an iPhone MOV recorded in HEVC?
Yes. The server decodes HEVC and writes H.264 video. One caveat: HDR and Dolby Vision recordings are converted to standard SDR color, so very bright highlights and saturated tones may look different from the original.
Does the converted MOV keep its original quality?
Not exactly. Any conversion re-encodes the picture, so a small amount of detail is lost; the high preset keeps the closest match. The result is visually similar on a phone or laptop screen, especially for clips recorded at ordinary settings.
What happens to the audio in my MOV file?
The first audio track is re-encoded to 128 kbps AAC and kept in the MP4. Additional tracks, such as a second language or a separate commentary recording, are not carried over.
Can this tool open .qt or .m4v files?
The upload accepts .mov files only. Use the MP4 Converter for M4V files or other containers that need to end up as MP4.
My MOV is not converting. What should I check?
Most failures come from incomplete transfers, screen-recording files with DRM, or files larger than 100 MB. Try copying the file again, confirm it plays locally, and check the size before retrying.
How large can the MOV file be?
Uploads are limited to 100 MB and each job is stopped after three minutes. A long 4K recording will not fit those limits; a short phone clip or a screen recording usually will.
Are uploaded MOV files kept on the server?
No. The upload and the finished MP4 are written to a temporary directory and deleted automatically after the download. Nothing is retained, and no account is required to use the tool.
