About Markdown Editor

Markdown is the plain-text format behind README files, documentation, notes apps and blog drafts. It is quick to type and easy to store in version control, but it only becomes readable when something renders it. A browser editor removes the install step: you keep the raw text in one pane and see the formatted result in the other while you work.

The preview here is generated with marked and passed through DOMPurify before it reaches the page, so raw HTML in a document cannot run scripts or inject forms. Toolbar buttons insert the syntax you need at the cursor, counts update as you type, and the finished document leaves the browser only when you copy the HTML or download the .md source.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Markdown Editor for real work.
  • Live sanitized preview

Rendered HTML appears beside the editor a moment after you stop typing, and every block is passed through DOMPurify before it is inserted.

  • Nine formatting buttons

Insert headings, bold, italic, inline code, links, bullet lists, numbered lists, quotes and fenced code blocks at the cursor or around the selection.

  • Split view and mobile tabs

The editor and preview sit side by side on a wide screen; on a phone you switch between Write and Preview with a tab bar.

  • Word, character and line counts

Three counts update as you type, so you can check the length of documentation, release notes or a README before publishing.

  • Copy HTML or download .md

Copy the sanitized HTML for a CMS or email template, or download the original Markdown as a .md file with today's date in the filename.

  • Raw HTML filtered

Scripts, event handlers, forms, iframes and inline styles are stripped from the preview, so a pasted document cannot repurpose the page.

How to use Markdown Editor

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Write or paste Markdown

Type in the editor or paste an existing document; the preview updates after a short pause.

  2. 02

    Insert formatting from the toolbar

Select text first when you want it wrapped, then press a toolbar button such as Bold or Code block; the syntax is inserted at the cursor.

  3. 03

    Switch views on a phone

On a narrow screen, use the Write and Preview tabs to move between the source and the rendered result.

  4. 04

    Check the counts

Read the word, character and line totals under the panes before you copy or download the document.

  5. 05

Copy HTML or download the source

Use Copy HTML to take the sanitized markup elsewhere, or Download .md to keep the editable source file.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Raw HTML is filtered, so embeds that rely on scripts, iframes or inline styles do not appear in the preview.
  • The live preview pauses above 150,000 characters; the counts, Clear and Download .md keep working on the full text.
  • The sanitized HTML carries no styling, and linked images are loaded by the browser from their own URLs rather than by FormatFlow.

Privacy and file handling

Markdown editing, parsing, sanitizing, counting and downloading all run in this browser tab. The document is never uploaded, stored or logged, and closing the page discards it. The only outbound request would be one your own Markdown asks for, such as a linked image loaded from its URL.

Markdown Editor FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
What is Markdown, and what does this editor do?
Markdown is a lightweight syntax for plain-text formatting: hashes for headings, asterisks for emphasis, dashes for lists. This editor gives you a text box, a formatting toolbar and a rendered preview, so you can write the source and check the result in the same tab.
Is the preview sanitized before it is displayed?
Yes. marked converts the Markdown to HTML and DOMPurify cleans that HTML before it is inserted into the page, so the preview never renders unsanitized markup. Scripts, event handlers, forms, iframes, embedded media and inline styles are removed in the process.
Does the editor support tables and strikethrough?
Yes. marked runs with GitHub-flavored Markdown enabled, so pipe tables, strikethrough, autolinks and fenced code blocks render. Task-list checkboxes are removed by the sanitizer because they are interactive form elements, so the list items keep their text but lose the tick boxes.
Which Markdown flavor does the editor use?
It follows CommonMark plus the usual GitHub extensions such as tables and strikethrough. Extensions that neither of those specifications defines, such as footnotes, math notation and custom containers, are not implemented; their syntax appears as plain text in the preview.
Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. Writing, parsing, sanitizing, counting and downloading all run in this browser tab, so the document is never uploaded, stored or logged. Closing the page discards it, and the only request it can make is one your own Markdown asks for, such as a linked image.
What happens with very large documents?
The live preview pauses above 150,000 characters so the tab stays responsive. The counts, Clear and Download .md continue to work on the full document, while Copy HTML becomes available again once the text is back under the limit.
Can I copy the HTML into my website or CMS?
Yes. Copy HTML gives you clean markup for headings, lists, tables, code and links. It carries no CSS, so the typography comes from the site you paste it into, and embeds that depend on scripts or iframes will not be included because the sanitizer removes them.
How are the word, character and line counts calculated?
Characters are Unicode code points including spaces, words are letter and number runs separated by whitespace, and lines are split on line breaks. The counts measure the raw Markdown, so syntax characters such as hashes and asterisks are included even though they are invisible in the preview.
