About AVI to GIF

AVI is one of the oldest video containers still in circulation: camcorders, older screen recorders, downloads and archived projects all produce it. Browsers and modern chat clients will not play an AVI, but almost all of them show a GIF inline, which makes conversion a practical way to rescue a short clip from an old file.

This converter accepts an .avi upload, decodes it with FFmpeg on our server and writes an animated GIF from the section you choose. Because GIF stores each frame as a full image, the length, frame rate and width you pick decide the file size. Choose a start time, keep the clip to ten seconds or less, pick 6 to 12 frames per second and a width from 160 to 480 pixels; the server builds a palette from the frames so colors stay close to the source.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use AVI to GIF for real work.
  • Handles legacy AVI files

The picker accepts .avi only and decodes the common codecs found in old recordings, so an archive clip can become something shareable again.

  • Choose where the GIF starts

Set a start time in seconds and a clip length up to 10 seconds to grab the moment that matters from a long recording.

  • Tune size with frame rate and width

Pick 6 to 12 frames per second and 160 to 480 pixels of width; those two settings control most of the GIF's final size.

  • Palette generated from your frames

The server extracts a color palette from the selected frames and applies it with dithering, which avoids flat, posterised output.

  • One job, clear limits

One file per job, 100 MB per upload and a three-minute processing cap keep the server queue predictable for everyone.

  • No leftovers on the server

The AVI upload and the finished GIF are deleted automatically when your download completes; nothing is stored or linked to an account.

How to use AVI to GIF

No account, no installation — one upload, one conversion, and the temporary copy is deleted.
  1. 01

    Add the AVI file

Drop the .avi clip into the workspace or click Choose file. Uploads up to 100 MB are accepted.

  2. 02

    Set the start time

Enter the second where the section you want begins, or leave 0 to start at the beginning of the file.

  3. 03

Choose duration, frame rate and width

Keep the clip between 1 and 10 seconds, then pick 6 to 12 fps and a width between 160 and 480 px.

  4. 04

    Create the GIF

Click Create GIF. The server seeks to the start point, extracts the frames, builds the palette and writes the animation while the progress bar advances.

  5. 05

    Preview and download

Confirm the loop in the preview, then download the GIF with a filename based on the original clip.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Accepts .avi files only, up to 100 MB, one file per job.
  • GIF output is capped at 10 seconds, 12 fps and 480 pixels wide.
  • GIF has no audio and a 256-color palette, so gradients and photographic footage can band.
  • Very old or uncommon AVI codecs may not decode, and jobs stop after three minutes.

Privacy and file handling

The AVI file is uploaded to a temporary directory on our server, converted to GIF with FFmpeg, and streamed back to you as a download. Both the upload and the GIF are deleted automatically when the download completes, and nothing is stored permanently, logged as content or shared with anyone.

AVI to GIF FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Why convert AVI to GIF rather than MP4?
GIF plays inline in chat apps, wikis and issue trackers without a player, while an AVI will not open in most browsers at all. If you need normal video instead, convert the AVI to MP4 and share that file.
Can this tool open any AVI codec?
It decodes the common codecs found in AVI files, such as MPEG-4 Part 2, MJPEG and H.264. Very old or uncommon codecs can fail; converting the AVI to MP4 first usually resolves that.
Why is the GIF bigger than my AVI file?
GIF stores each frame as a separate image with a 256-color palette, so it is far less efficient than video compression. Keep the clip short, use 8-10 fps and a width of 320 px or less to control the size.
Will the GIF include the AVI's audio?
No. GIF has no audio track, so sound is dropped during conversion. Keep the AVI or convert it to MP4 if the audio needs to stay with the picture.
Is the AVI's frame stretched in the GIF?
No. The frame is scaled to your chosen width and the height follows the source aspect ratio, so the GIF keeps the shape of the AVI instead of being distorted.
What are the limits for AVI uploads?
Each file can be up to 100 MB, one file per job, and a conversion is stopped after three minutes. Long screen recordings should be trimmed before converting.
Can I make a GIF longer than 10 seconds from an AVI?
No. GIF clips are capped at 10 seconds to keep the files usable in chat and documentation. Change the start time to capture a different section of the recording.
Are my AVI files kept on the server?
No. The upload and the generated GIF exist only in a temporary directory for the duration of the job and are deleted automatically after the download. No sign-up is required.
