About Word to PDF

Word documents reflow: the text wraps to whatever page or window it is shown in. A PDF freezes that layout into fixed pages, which is why contracts, CVs and invoices are sent as PDFs. The hard part of converting is deciding how the document should break across pages, how wide the margins are and which fonts the reader will have, because Word and a browser will never agree on every glyph width.

This converter reads the .docx package with mammoth, turns its structure into styled HTML and renders that to PDF pages. You get two routes: a direct download that renders the pages as images, and a print view that keeps real, selectable text if you choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. Both are useful, and the workspace tells you which trade-off you are taking.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Word to PDF for real work.
  • Two output routes

Download a rendered PDF instantly, or open the print view and save as PDF when you need selectable, searchable text.

  • Structure preserved

Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, numbered and bullet lists, tables and inline images are kept in their document order.

  • A4 or US Letter

Choose the paper size and a normal, narrow or wide margin before rendering, so the result fits local printing standards.

  • Parsed-content preview

Open the preview before converting to check that the document was read correctly and to see any converter warnings.

  • No upload

The .docx stays on your device. There is no account, no job queue and nothing to clean up afterwards.

  • Images included

Inline pictures are carried through as data inside the document and rendered with the surrounding text.

How to use Word to PDF

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Add the Word file

Drop a .docx file onto the workspace or click Choose file. Legacy .doc files need to be re-saved as .docx in Word first.

  2. 02

    Check the parsed preview

Expand Preview parsed content to confirm the headings and paragraphs were read correctly. Warnings are listed above it.

  3. 03

    Choose the page setup

Select A4 or US Letter and pick the margin width that suits the document.

  4. 04

    Convert or print

Click Convert to PDF for a downloadable file, or Open print view and choose Save as PDF in the browser dialog for selectable text.

  5. 05

    Download the PDF

Save the file, then open it once to confirm the page breaks and table widths look right.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Legacy .doc files are not supported; save the document as .docx first.
  • Layout fidelity is limited. Text boxes, multi-column pages, headers and footers, footnotes and tracked changes are simplified or dropped.
  • The direct download produces image-based pages, so its text is not selectable; use the print view for searchable text.
  • Up to 30 MB per file. Image-heavy documents take several seconds, and very long documents (dozens of pages) can exhaust the browser canvas — use the print view for those.

Privacy and file handling

Your .docx file is opened, parsed and rendered entirely within your browser. It is never uploaded to FormatFlow or anyone else, and no copy of the document or its images is stored. The PDF is assembled in memory on your device and disappears when you close or reset the tool.

Word to PDF FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Can I convert an old .doc file to PDF here?
No. The converter reads the modern .docx format only. Open the .doc in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, choose Save As and pick .docx, then convert the saved copy.
Why is the text in my downloaded PDF not selectable?
The direct download renders each page as an image, which keeps the layout stable but makes the words part of the picture. Use Open print view and choose Save as PDF instead — that route produces a PDF with real, selectable text.
How close is the PDF to Word's own layout?
Close for ordinary documents but not identical. A browser renders the file using different font metrics and page-breaking rules than Word, so line breaks, table widths and page counts can shift. The print view shows the layout before you save it.
Are tables and images kept in the PDF?
Yes, tables and inline images are carried through in document order. Very wide tables can overflow the page width, and floating shapes or text-box layouts are simplified.
What happens to tracked changes and comments?
They are not reproduced. Comments, revision marks and footnotes are outside what the renderer keeps, so accept or reject tracked changes in Word before converting if the final text matters.
Do the fonts match the original Word document?
Only when the same font is available to the browser. Custom or licensed fonts are substituted with a similar system font, which can change spacing and line breaks. Standard fonts such as Arial, Calibri and Times New Roman usually substitute cleanly.
Is my Word document uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is unzipped, parsed and rendered entirely inside this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and no copy is retained after you close the page.
How large a .docx file can I convert?
Up to 30 MB. Documents with many high-resolution images take longer and can exhaust browser memory, so for very large files consider exporting a PDF directly from Word or Google Docs.
