About Merge PDF

Merging PDFs is routine paperwork: a signed contract plus its annex, a stack of receipts for an expense claim, chapters exported from different tools that belong in one file. The files usually arrive separately and the person receiving them wants a single document with a predictable order, often for an upload form that accepts one attachment only.

This merger copies pages from each PDF into a new document with pdf-lib, so text stays selectable and nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. It shows the page count of every file and the total before you merge, keeps the list order you arrange, and lets you preview the result. Everything runs locally — the documents never leave the browser — and password-protected files are reported by name instead of failing silently.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Merge PDF for real work.
  • Merge up to 20 PDFs

Combine a full set of contracts, receipts or chapters in one run, with a clear total of documents, pages and file size.

  • Reorder with buttons or keyboard

Move any file up or down the list before merging, so page order is decided deliberately rather than by upload order.

  • Pages copied, not re-rendered

Page content is copied into the merged document, so selectable text, vector graphics and image quality are preserved exactly.

  • Per-file page counts

Each file's page count is read as soon as it is added, so you can spot a wrong file before merging.

  • Named password errors

If a PDF is encrypted, the tool tells you which file needs to be unlocked instead of ending with a vague failure.

  • Preview before download

The merged PDF is shown in an inline preview so you can check the first pages and page order before saving.

How to use Merge PDF

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Up to 20 PDFs and about 100 MB total per merge. Larger sets must be merged in batches.
  • Bookmarks, comments, form fields and digital signatures are not preserved; only page content is copied.
  • Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked before they can be added to the merge.

Privacy and file handling

The PDFs are opened and combined inside your browser with pdf-lib. They are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and the merged document is created on your device. Closing the tab discards the files and the result.

Merge PDF FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
How many PDF files can I merge in one go?
Up to 20 documents and about 100 MB in total per run. For bigger sets, merge in batches and then merge the batches together, or use a desktop PDF tool.
Does merging PDFs reduce image or text quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new document rather than re-rendered or re-compressed, so images, vector graphics and selectable text are exactly as they were in the source files.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not while they are encrypted — the tool names the file that needs unlocking. Open that PDF in a viewer, save an unprotected copy, then add the copy to the merge list.
Will bookmarks, form fields and comments survive merging?
Page content survives, but document-level extras such as bookmarks, comments, form fields and digital signatures are not carried over. If those matter, keep the originals alongside the merged file.
What happens when the PDFs have different page sizes?
Each page keeps its original dimensions, so the merged document can mix A4, Letter and custom page sizes. That is normal and prints correctly, though a uniform document needs the pages rebuilt first.
Is the order of files always the order I added them?
Files are merged in the order shown in the list, starting at the top. Newly added files go to the end, and the arrow buttons let you change the order before clicking Merge.
Are my PDFs uploaded to merge them?
No. Every file is opened and combined locally by pdf-lib inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded and no copies are kept; the merged result exists only until you close or reset the tab.
Can I remove a page while merging?
Not in this tool. Merge the files, then open the result in Split PDF to extract the pages you want — both tools work locally and the changes are separate steps.
