About Split PDF

A split is usually about sending less: one chapter instead of the whole manual, two specific pages of a contract, an invoice separated from the statement it arrived with. Many PDF apps can do it, but they often mean installing something, uploading a confidential document to a random service, or working through a page-thumbnail interface that is painful on a laptop trackpad.

This tool gives you a plain page-range field instead. Type 1-3, 5 to pull those pages, choose one file per page, or cut the document into equal chunks. Pages are copied into new PDFs rather than re-rendered, so quality and selectable text are preserved. Multi-file results download as individual PDFs and as a single ZIP, and the whole operation runs in your tab.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Split PDF for real work.
  • Three split modes

Extract named page ranges, save every selected page as its own PDF, or split into files of equal page count.

  • Simple range syntax

Type ranges like 1-3, 5, 8- in one field, with live validation that explains exactly what is wrong if it does not parse.

  • ZIP plus individual downloads

Several results come as a ZIP for convenience and as separate download buttons when you only need one part.

  • Original quality preserved

Pages are copied into new documents without rendering, so text stays selectable and images keep their original data.

  • Plan preview

The workspace states how many files will be created and how many pages they contain before anything is generated.

  • Local processing

The PDF never leaves the browser, and the output is cleaned up when you reset the tool or close the tab.

How to use Split PDF

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Add the PDF

Drop the file into the workspace. The page count is shown so you know which numbers are valid.

  2. 02

    Choose a split mode

Extract ranges for specific pages, one PDF per page for individual pages, or chunks for equal-sized parts.

  3. 03

    Enter the pages or size

Type ranges such as 1-3, 5, leave the page field empty for the whole document, or set how many pages each chunk should contain.

  4. 04

    Split the document

Click Split PDF. The plan line tells you exactly how many files the current settings will create.

  5. 05

    Download the parts

Save a single resulting PDF directly, or download the ZIP with every file and pick individual parts from the list.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Up to 100 output files and 100 MB per source PDF. Bigger jobs need splitting in several passes.
  • Splitting is page-based; there is no split by target file size.
  • Bookmarks, comments, form fields and digital signatures are not copied into the split files.
  • Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked before they can be split.

Privacy and file handling

The source PDF is opened and split entirely within your browser using pdf-lib. It is never uploaded and no copies are stored on a server. The split files are created on your device and are discarded when you reset the tool or close the page.

Split PDF FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
What page range syntax does the splitter accept?
Numbers are 1-based and inclusive. 7 extracts page 7, 1-3 extracts pages 1 to 3, 8- extracts page 8 to the end, and 1-3, 5, 8- combines several selections in one field. Commas create separate output files in ranges mode.
How do I extract just one page from a PDF?
Use Extract ranges and type the page number, for example 4. The result is a single PDF containing only that page. With One PDF per page, every selected page becomes its own file.
Does splitting a PDF lower the quality of its pages?
No. The splitter copies whole pages into new PDF documents; it does not render or re-compress them. Text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution and data.
How many files can one split create?
Up to 100 output PDFs per run, and the source PDF can be up to 100 MB. If you need more parts, split the document in two passes using ranges.
Can I split by file size instead of page count?
No. Splitting works on page numbers and page counts, because PDF pages vary so much in size that only page-based splits are predictable. Compress the result afterwards if a part is too large to send.
Are bookmarks and form fields kept in the split files?
Only page content is copied. Document-level items such as bookmarks, form fields, comments and signatures are not preserved in the parts. The visual content of each page is unchanged.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is encrypted. Save an unlocked copy in your PDF viewer or print it to a new PDF, then split that copy. The tool names the problem rather than failing silently.
Is my PDF uploaded when splitting?
No. The document is read and split inside your browser tab with pdf-lib. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged, and the parts exist only in memory until you download them.
