About Image Rotator

A sideways photo is one of the simplest problems an image editor solves, yet installing one for a single rotation is overkill. This rotator turns an image in 90-degree steps, mirrors it horizontally or vertically, and shows the result in a live preview so you can check that the subject is not suddenly reversed.

The transform runs on an HTML canvas: the decoded pixels are rotated and flipped once, then encoded in the format you choose. Because the preview and the download come from the same drawing code, what you see is exactly what you get. The original file stays in the tab; nothing is uploaded or stored.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Image Rotator for real work.
  • 90-degree steps

Turn the image left or right in quarter turns that never soften or resample the pixels.

  • Horizontal and vertical flips

Mirror the picture across either axis to fix a selfie or match a template's layout.

  • Live preview

Every rotation and flip updates the preview immediately, including the output dimensions.

  • Output format choice

Save as JPG, PNG or WebP, or keep the source format, with a quality slider for lossy formats.

  • Sideways photos fixed

EXIF orientation is applied before the transform, so the preview and the saved pixels match.

  • Local processing

The image is decoded and re-encoded in your browser; it never reaches a server.

How to use Image Rotator

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Add your image

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file onto the picker; HEIC should be converted to JPG first.

  2. 02

    Rotate and flip

Use Rotate left, Rotate right and the two flip buttons until the live preview looks right.

  3. 03

    Pick the output format

Keep the original format or choose PNG, JPG or WebP; lossy formats also get a quality slider.

  4. 04

    Rotate and download

Click Rotate image, then download the result at the image's full resolution.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Only 90, 180 and 270-degree rotations are supported; arbitrary angles are not.
  • JPG and WebP output re-compress the image; PNG avoids that but makes larger files.
  • HEIC and camera raw files must be converted to JPG or PNG before rotating.

Privacy and file handling

The image is decoded, rotated and re-encoded inside your browser tab with the Canvas API. It is never uploaded to FormatFlow or a third party, and no copy is stored. Closing or refreshing the page discards the file.

Image Rotator FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Does rotating an image reduce its quality?
A 90-degree rotation is a lossless rearrangement of pixels inside the canvas, so no detail is lost. Saving as JPG or WebP does re-encode the image, so use PNG output if you want to avoid any additional compression.
What is the difference between rotating and flipping?
Rotating turns the image around its centre in quarter turns. Flipping mirrors it, so the left and right sides swap or the top and bottom swap, which is why text becomes unreadable.
How does EXIF orientation affect the result?
Many phone photos store their rotation as an EXIF tag instead of real pixels. The tool applies that orientation first, then applies your transform, so the downloaded file is upright everywhere.
Can I rotate an image by 45 degrees?
No. This tool only does exact 90-degree steps and mirrors; arbitrary angles would need to resample pixels and are left to a full image editor.
Why did the preview show a different size?
A 90 or 270-degree rotation swaps width and height. The preview and the dimension readout show the real output size before you download.
Which output format should I choose?
PNG keeps every pixel and is best for screenshots and further editing. JPG gives the smallest file for photos, and WebP usually gives an even smaller file that modern browsers handle well.
Can I rotate a HEIC photo here?
Not directly. Convert the HEIC to JPG first with the HEIC to JPG tool, then rotate the converted file; the result can be saved as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Is my photo uploaded when I rotate it?
No. The image is read into the browser tab, transformed on a local canvas and never transmitted to FormatFlow or anyone else.
