About Tip Calculator

A tip calculator is really three calculations in one: the tip on the bill, the total with the tip added, and each person's share. Doing that in your head at the end of a meal is where the awkward rounding and splitting happens. This tool shows all three at once, updates them as you type, and keeps the arithmetic visible so the total is easy to check before you pay.

Tip percentages are personal, and customs vary between countries and situations, so the calculator does not assume one. Start from a preset for a quick answer or type any percentage, including zero, and split the total equally between two or more people. The result is formatted in US dollars, euros, pounds, rupees, Australian dollars or Canadian dollars; the maths never changes, only the symbol.

Limitations worth knowing

  • The split is equal; shares are not adjusted for what each person ordered.
  • Tax, service charges and discounts are not detected or added automatically.
  • The currency menu formats amounts only and performs no exchange-rate conversion.
  • Rounded per-person shares can add up to a cent more or less than the exact total.

How is the tip calculated?
The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage and rounded to the nearest cent. The total is the bill plus that tip, and each person's share is the total divided by the number of people.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Customs differ: many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the final bill. This calculator uses whatever amount you enter, so choose the base you prefer and type that number.
What if the bill already includes a service charge?
Then you are not obliged to add another tip. Enter the bill without the service charge if you want to tip on top, or set the tip to zero to see the total unchanged.
How should I split a bill unevenly?
This tool splits equally. For an uneven split, calculate the full total here first and then divide that total between people according to what each one ordered.
How do I round up the tip?
The results are already rounded to the nearest cent. To round up further, type a slightly higher tip percentage or round the per-person total up when you pay.
Can I use a zero or very high tip percentage?
Yes, any percentage from 0 to 100 is accepted. A zero tip shows the bill with no service added, which is useful where service is included or tipping is unusual.
Does the calculator convert between currencies?
No. The currency menu only changes how numbers are formatted, using the browser's locale rules. The amount itself is not converted at any exchange rate.
Is the tip percentage applied to the whole bill?
Yes, it applies to the bill amount you enter. If you want to tip only on the food and not on drinks or tax, enter that subtotal as the bill instead.
