About Percentage Error Calculator

Percent error and percent difference are easy to mix up. One compares a measurement with a known accepted value; the other compares two measurements when neither is authoritative. Using the wrong one, or reporting a sign that the formula has already removed, makes a careful result look careless.

This calculator implements both formulas and shows the arithmetic with your numbers substituted. Percent error divides by the accepted value and reports whether the experimental result sits above or below it; percent difference divides by the average of the two values and is symmetric. Zero denominators are explained rather than returned as Infinity.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Percentage Error Calculator for real work.
  • Two formulas, clearly separated

Switch between percent error against an accepted value and percent difference between two measurements.

  • Working shown with your values

The formula, the substituted numbers and the final percentage are displayed in one place.

  • Direction kept separate

The absolute value makes the percentage non-negative; the tool states whether the experimental value is above or below the accepted value.

  • Honest denominator checks

An accepted value of zero and a zero average are rejected with an explanation instead of producing an infinite result.

  • Nothing uploaded

Both calculations run in the browser; the numbers never leave the page and no account is needed.

How to use Percentage Error Calculator

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Pick the comparison

Choose percent error when one value is a reference and percent difference when neither is.

  2. 02

    Enter the values

Type the two numbers; decimals and negative values are accepted, but comma decimal marks are not used.

  3. 03

    Read the percentage

The result appears as a non-negative percentage with the absolute difference and denominator beside it.

  4. 04

    Check the explanation

The direction note explains whether the measured value was above or below the accepted one.

  5. 05

    Share the working

The formula and substitution lines can be copied into a report so the percentage is reproducible.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Percent error needs a non-zero accepted value, and percent difference needs a non-zero average; other cases are reported as undefined.
  • Negative values follow the absolute-value formulas shown, so the direction of an error is reported separately.
  • The calculator reports the conventional percentage only; it does not propagate measurement uncertainty.

Privacy and file handling

The values you type are handled with plain JavaScript inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and no request is made to a server while you calculate. Closing the page clears the inputs.

Percentage Error Calculator FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
Should percent error be reported as positive or negative?
By the usual formula it is positive, because the numerator uses the absolute value. If the direction matters, say separately that the experimental value is above or below the accepted value, as this calculator does.
Why is the accepted value's sign ignored in the denominator?
Percent error describes the size of the difference relative to the accepted value, so the absolute value of the accepted value is used. That keeps a negative accepted value from flipping the sign of the percentage.
What is the difference between percent error and percent difference?
Percent error requires one value to be a trusted reference and divides by that value. Percent difference compares two measurements with no reference and divides by their average, which makes it symmetric.
Can the accepted value be zero?
No, because the formula divides by it. A zero accepted value has no percentage error; report the absolute difference instead, or choose a different reference.
Why is percent difference undefined for opposite values such as 5 and −5?
The average of 5 and −5 is zero, so the denominator vanishes. The relative difference from a zero average is not defined; report the absolute difference instead.
Does the absolute value hide a mistake?
No. The size of the error and its direction are reported separately, so a result above the accepted value is not confused with one below it.
Are the values I type saved anywhere?
No. Both formulas run in your browser; the numbers are not uploaded, stored or logged, and closing the page clears them.
