About Mean Median Mode Calculator

The mean, median and mode describe the centre of a data set in different ways: the mean uses every value, the median splits the sorted list in half, and the mode reports the most frequent value. When a list is skewed or has repeated entries, the three answers can tell different stories.

This calculator reports all three from a pasted list, handles data with several modes, and explains the method with your numbers. The sorted list, a frequency table and optional quartiles make it easier to check the result and to see why an average may not represent the typical value.

What this tool does

The details that matter when you use Mean Median Mode Calculator for real work.
  • Three measures of centre

Mean, median and mode are reported together, with the count, sum, minimum, maximum and range.

  • Multimodal aware

When more than one value shares the highest frequency, all of them are listed; a list where nothing repeats is reported as having no mode.

  • Optional quartiles

Turn on Q1, Q3 and the interquartile range, computed with a stated median-of-halves method.

  • Frequency table

Every distinct value is listed with how often it occurs, which explains the mode and shows repeated entries at a glance.

  • Sorted list and method

The sorted data and the step-by-step calculation are shown, so the median and mode can be checked by eye.

How to use Mean Median Mode Calculator

No account, no installation — the whole job happens in this browser tab.
  1. 01

    Paste the numbers

Enter the list with commas, spaces or newlines between values; repeated values are fine.

  2. 02

    Read the measures of centre

The mean is shown first, with the median and mode in the summary grid below.

  3. 03

    Check the sorted list

The sorted values make the median and any clusters of repeated values easy to verify.

  4. 04

    Turn quartiles on if needed

Enable Q1 and Q3 to see the interquartile range; the method used is stated beside the result.

  5. 05

    Look at the frequency table

The table shows how often each value appears, which is the basis of the mode.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Number lists are limited to 2,000 values per run.
  • Quartiles follow the median-of-halves convention, so another tool may interpolate them differently.
  • The mode is only meaningful for discrete or heavily repeated values; for continuous measurements every value may occur once.

Privacy and file handling

The list you paste is parsed and calculated with plain JavaScript inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and no request is made to a server while you work. Closing the page clears the input.

Mean Median Mode Calculator FAQ

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask before using this tool.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when the data is skewed or contains outliers, because it depends on position rather than every value. The mean uses all values and is pulled towards extremes, which can mislead for incomes, house prices or small samples.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for the highest frequency the data is multimodal and every one of those values is a mode. A data set with no repeated values has no mode at all.
How is the median found for an even number of values?
Sort the values and average the two middle ones. For 2, 4, 5, 9 the middle pair is 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5.
Why do different tools give different quartiles?
Several conventions exist: some split at the median and exclude it when n is odd, others include it or interpolate between positions. This calculator uses the median-of-halves method and states that choice, so small differences from another tool are expected.
What is the interquartile range used for?
The IQR is the span of the middle half of the data, from Q3 minus Q1. It describes spread without being pulled by extreme values, which makes it a natural companion to the median.
Can the mean and median be the same?
Yes, and that is common in symmetric data. Values such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 have a mean and median of 3; in skewed data the mean sits further towards the long tail.
How many numbers can I paste into the calculator?
Up to 2,000 values per run. The sorted list shows the first 200 values when the list is longer, while the statistics always use every value.
